A limited-resource booklist: one core source per subject, Maharashtra Board/NCERT foundation, PYQs and a single current-affairs stream.

Don't Buy Everything

MPSC-focused sources consistently emphasize a limited-resource strategy. Your preparation needs exactly five types of resources.

1. Foundation books — NCERT + Maharashtra State Board
2. One standard book per subject
3. Maharashtra-specific resources
4. Current affairs (one primary source)
5. PYQs + test series

The biggest mistake
Collecting books instead of revising them. Don't read five books per subject — pick one core source and revise it repeatedly.

History & Geography

History — Foundation

Maharashtra State Board History: 6th-10th for basics, 11th-12th for deeper history.

Modern India

A Brief History of Modern India — Rajiv Ahir (Spectrum). First choice for British rule, social reform, freedom struggle, Congress, Gandhian era, revolutionary movements and constitutional developments. Consistently included in current MPSC booklists.

Maharashtra History

A dedicated Maharashtra-focused book such as अनिल कटारे — आधुनिक महाराष्ट्राचा इतिहास, rather than relying only on general Indian-history books.

Geography — Foundation

Maharashtra State Board Geography, especially 8th-10th, 11th and 12th.

Physical Geography

Certificate Physical and Human Geography — G.C. Leong: physical geography, climate, mountains, rocks, winds, natural vegetation, world geography.

Maharashtra Geography + Atlas

A.B. Savadi — भूगोल व पर्यावरण / महाराष्ट्राचा भूगोल for Maharashtra-specific prep, plus the Oxford Student Atlas. Don't leave the atlas on the shelf — spend 10-15 minutes with maps regularly.

• History combination: State Board → Spectrum → Maharashtra History book → PYQs
• Geography combination: State Board → G.C. Leong → A.B. Savadi → Atlas → PYQs

Polity & Economy

Polity — Main book

Indian Polity — M. Laxmikanth (available in English and Marathi). Covers Constitution, Fundamental Rights, Parliament, President, PM, judiciary, federalism, constitutional bodies, local government, elections and governance. One of the most consistently recommended polity resources for MPSC.

Maharashtra Polity

Add Maharashtra State Board Political Science/Civics and a Maharashtra-focused polity reference if required. You don't need three polity books cover-to-cover.

Economy — Foundation + Main

Start with 11th + 12th standard Economics, then Indian Economy — Ramesh Singh for GDP, inflation, banking, monetary/fiscal policy, public finance, agriculture, industry, employment and development.

Marathi Economy alternative

If studying primarily in Marathi, use a dedicated MPSC Economy book such as Kiran Desale / Ranjan Kolambe rather than forcing yourself through a difficult English reference.

Most important Maharashtra economy resources
Maharashtra Economic Survey + Maharashtra Budget, every year. Don't memorize the entire document — focus on major schemes, agriculture, industry, employment, infrastructure, state finances, important statistics and government priorities.

• Economy combination: 11th/12th Economics → Ramesh Singh OR good Marathi MPSC Economy book → Maharashtra Economic Survey → Budget → Current Affairs

Environment, Science & Sci-Tech

Environment

Shankar IAS — Environment (commonly recommended for MPSC). Don't memorize the whole book — focus on ecology, ecosystems, biodiversity, pollution, climate change, conventions, conservation, protected areas and environmental laws. Foundation: NCERT Biology + Maharashtra Board Science. Prepare Maharashtra separately: national parks, tiger reserves, sanctuaries, species, forests, rivers, wetlands.

General Science

Maharashtra State Board Science (especially 8th-10th) + Lucent General Science for quick coverage and revision. Focus more on biology, human body, diseases, vaccines, biotech, space, computers, AI, cybersecurity, nanotechnology and new technology — not deep Physics/Chemistry.

Science & Technology

No single cover-to-cover book. Use: basic science → current affairs → government/ISRO/DRDO developments → MPSC PYQs. For each development (e.g. a semiconductor initiative), understand what it is, why it matters, where it is used, India's problem, the government initiative and economic/security implications.

• Environment combination: Basic Science/Biology → Shankar IAS selected chapters → Maharashtra environment → Current Affairs

Current Affairs & Government Resources

Use ONE primary source — not Loksatta + The Hindu + Indian Express + 5 magazines + 10 Telegram channels.

• If Marathi is primary: Loksatta + one MPSC-oriented monthly compilation (commonly recommended: Prithvi Parikrama, Unique Bulletin, Dnyandeep Express)
• If English is comfortable: The Hindu OR Indian Express (not both) + one monthly compilation
• Maharashtra government resources: Maharashtra Budget, Maharashtra Economic Survey, Lokrajya
• India-level resources: PIB, Yojana, India Budget, Economic Survey, ministry releases

How to read government documents
You don't need every document. For each scheme extract: Scheme → Objective → Target group → Ministry/department → Funding → Maharashtra relevance.

CSAT, Ethics, Essay & Language Papers

CSAT

Main resource: MPSC CSAT previous year papers. If needed: R.S. Aggarwal (Quantitative Aptitude) and M.K. Pandey (Analytical Reasoning) — but don't buy both from day one. Start with PYQs; when a weakness like percentage or ratio appears, study only those chapters. Much more efficient.

Ethics (GS-IV)

One MPSC/UPSC Ethics reference or good coaching notes — but book-reading should not be the primary activity. Study Concept → Example → Case Study → Answer Writing, and build your own examples from administration, Maharashtra, government schemes, real incidents, public service and everyday life.

Essay

One good essay collection is enough, e.g. 151 Essays for IAS/PCS & Other Competitive Exams (appears in current MPSC resource lists) for structure and examples. Practice matters more: write 1 essay every 1-2 weeks initially, gradually increasing frequency.

Marathi

If already strong, minimal time needed. For grammar: M. R. Walimbe — Sugam Marathi Vyakaran (relevant edition). Focus on grammar, vocabulary, comprehension, essay, precis, translation. Marathi is qualifying — don't sacrifice GS preparation to maximize it.

English

If weak: S.P. Bakshi — Objective General English. If already good, skip months of grammar-book study and practise comprehension, precis, essay, grammar, vocabulary and translation.

Previous Year Questions — Must Have

• Get a compilation of MPSC Rajyaseva Prelims + Mains PYQs with explanations — this is not optional
• Prelims: solve at least the recent 10 years wherever papers are comparable and available
• Mains: go through previous questions topic-wise
