A few decades ago, explaining your career plan was relatively simple.
Teacher.
Engineer.
Doctor.
Banker.
Government officer.
Accountant.
The job existed. People understood what it involved. There was usually a fairly clear route to get there.

AI can generate a convincing answer.

Future workers will increasingly need to ask:

How do I verify it?
What information is missing?
What assumptions are being made?

Machines can generate text.
Humans still need to understand each other.
Explaining an idea clearly, working with teams, asking good questions and communicating decisions remain important across almost every profession.

This does not mean knowing how to make AI generate a cool Instagram caption.
Real literacy means understanding:
- What technology can do
- What it cannot reliably do
- When an output needs verification
- What information should not be shared
- How automation affects decisions
India is already changing how technology is introduced in education. The Ministry of Education announced in 2026 a curriculum framework for AI and computational thinking for Classes III to VIII, with an emphasis on problem-solving and competency-based learning.
That is a sign of where education is heading.
But There Is a Bigger Problem
We still expect students to choose careers extremely early.
At 17 or 18, people are often asked:
“What do you want to become?”
Meanwhile, the world itself is still figuring out what jobs will exist in the next decade.
That's a weird system.
Students are expected to make long-term decisions while technology is changing the rules underneath them.
